Stories from the Sea

Locally made using the best fabrics including organic cotton and bamboo, Seasalt has been making a name for itself since it launched in Penzance in 1981. Now with stores all over Cornwall, Devon, Guernsey and the Isles of Scilly, their popularity continues to soar and not without good reason. Catering to a wide variety of tastes and styles, they are less trend led and more design focused, which endlessly pleases their broad customer market – everyone from stylish Mum’s through to painfully cool Hipster types are happy to don a Seasalt garment and make it their own.

Ethics aside, Seasalt have struck that delicate balance between quality and affordability. Happy to do their own thing, they appear to have no real competitors in the current market that can match their environmental concern and social responsibility. They continue to go from strength to strength and this latest collection is one of their most impressive yet. We’re particularly coveting the ‘trinity dress’ that has us dreaming of a simpler life in Cornwall, wiling away the hours in our very own pottery studio.

Practical and pretty are what Seasalt do best and this is also evident in their new selection of bamboo socks, organic sketch tops and woven check waistcoats, which in our opinion is the easiest way to achieve that effortless layered look so popular during the fall months. Having just launched their first ever Autumn catalogue, Seasalt continue to draw influence from the rugged landscape around them. Based in Cornwall, they are never short of inspiration to draw upon but they are keen to keep the brand relatively exclusive with no desire to open shops nationwide. Seasalt Director, Neil Chadwick explains, ‘We have no plans to put a Seasalt on every highstreet. We’ve built a business with the help of our talented staff and loyal customers, and decided to respond to their request to make Seasalt more accessible across the country, by producing our mail order catalogue’.

Committed to the use of sustainable textiles, Seasalt are aiming to use more organic and bamboo in their future collections – yet another reason to support this forward thinking British brand. A self proclaimed melting pot of creative types, Seasalt seem to be one of the few businesses that are weathering the recession and it’s easy to see why. As we make our (much too long) wish list from the current collection, we can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeve next!
