All Year Round Agrotourism in Ibiza Captures the Essence of Eco-Luxury and Sustainable Living – Sophie Morrow explores how this Mediterranean paradise offers a sustainable escape.
Over the last few years, travellers are increasingly swapping hotels for agritourismos, as they seek intimate, rustic idylls immersed in nature and fuss-free locavore dining. But these farm stays are far from basic. Agritourism in 2024 offers a refined experience, blending stylish, upscale interiors with organic, farm-fresh meals and locally sourced wines. What was once seen as a back-to-basics escape now includes luxury design and elegant touches, all while maintaining a deep connection to the land.
Tucked away in the heart of Ibiza, is Can Lluc Agrotourism. Once a 300-year-old farmhouse, it has been lovingly transformed into a boutique rural hotel by owners Tina Soriano and Lucas Prats. Their vision was clear from the start: to create a space that honors Ibiza’s past while offering the comfort and elegance modern travelers seek. And so, the family’s ancestral home evolved, seamlessly blending rustic charm with understated luxury.
Just 20 minutes from the airport and port, and only 15 minutes from some of the island’s finest beaches, Can Lluc is perfectly connected. Tucked just outside the quaint town of San Rafael, a winding road leads you through the serene valley, and as you arrive, the air fills with the scent of pine, olive, and fig trees. I have arrived in paradise.
The accommodations are as diverse as they are inviting. Around the main building, twelve charming double rooms offer intimacy and comfort, each with its own private terrace where you can sit in the fading evening light with a glass of wine. Some of these accommodations remain open year-round and feature cozy wood burners, making Ibiza the perfect winter destination. I can’t think of a more romantic getaway than retreating here when the island has cooled down and the allure to party has faded away.
Further down the path, ten newly built apartments are scattered across the property, offering an added layer of privacy. Some come with private pools, perfect for a romantic escape, while others are designed for families or groups who want to experience the serenity of Can Lluc together. Lucas’ keen eye for minimalist design, praised by leading influencers, seamlessly enhances the rustic atmosphere of the spaces. His use of natural materials shines through, featuring original elements like drystone walls, ceilings crafted from Sabina wood, and roofing made from a local variety of juniper.
For those seeking an even more secluded retreat, and a more modern minimalistic feel, there are two larger villas, Can Jaume Curt and Can Prats, tucked away from the main hotel and with views far and wide. These villas retain the same rustic charm, with whitewashed walls and wooden beams, but are equipped with every modern convenience and ooze balearic luxury. The deluxe-suite Villas, which sit high up with views across the valley include private infinity pools and baths big enough for two. Whether you’re lounging in your private garden or enjoying a quiet evening indoors, these spaces invite you to completely unwind, and reconnect with nature, —and each other.
For me, the defining characteristic of an exceptional hotel is its ability to make you forget the world outside its doors within moments of your arrival. Not only did I do that, but I also imagined that in a parallel universe, this was my home, my bed, my cat, my life. The super super king size bed with soft white sheets, the outdoor shower under a canopy of bougainville, sunset on the terrace. It’s impossible not to dream. It’s impossible not to fall in love.
Every detail at Can Lluc seems crafted to enhance the natural surroundings. The property’s gardens are lush with Mediterranean plants, and the pathways are dotted with palm trees, flowers, and the occasional curious cat.
Sustainability is at the heart of Can Lluc’s ethos. The hotel has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact, installing solar panels that now provide all of its energy needs during the summer months. Thermal solar panels heat the hotel’s water, while new aerothermal systems in the villas further minimise energy consumption. There’s also a strong commitment to waste reduction, with a “plastic-free” policy in place, encouraging staff and guests alike to recycle and reduce waste. Local collaborations, such as the partnership with Ibiza Preservation to protect the endangered Ibiza wall lizard, highlight Can Lluc’s dedication to preserving the island’s fragile ecosystem.
Dining at Can Lluc is a celebration of Ibiza’s local produce. The restaurant’s menu is filled with dishes that feature ingredients grown on the island, from fresh fruits and vegetables to locally sourced meats and seafood. The emphasis on local, sustainable produce reflects the hotel’s broader commitment to supporting the community and reducing its carbon footprint. Can Lluc perfectly demonstrates how sustainability initiatives not only enhance the guest experience but also benefit the environment, setting a powerful example for others to follow.
Shiny five-star hotels have never been my thing. I’m drawn to rustic charm, to places with heart where you can feel the history in your bones. Places that connect on a personal level. A place that inspires introspection, prompting us to connect more with the land, the culture and of course, ourselves.
At Can Lluc, this transformative energy is palpable, thanks to the warmth and genuine hospitality of the owners who breathe life and soul into every corner of this magical place.
