Sublime Magazine introduces the Harmonize Project, an initiative addressing climate-sensitive infectious diseases across the Amazon and the Andes, growing cities.
From the heart of the Amazon to Barcelona, Harmonize is an international initiative implementing innovative solutions to address infectious diseases driven by extreme climatic events, environmental degradation, and socio-economic inequality.
The project is led by Rachel Lowe, head of the Global Health Resilience group at Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and was commissioned by Felipe J Colón-González and Isabel Fletcher at Wellcome Trust.
The HARMONIZE project, funded by Wellcome Trust, is working to better understand and respond to climate-sensitive infectious diseases in the Amazon, the Andes, growing cities and small islands.
The project brings together climate, environmental, health, and social data, and collects new information using drones and low-cost weather sensors to improve disease risk monitoring and forecasting. By combining satellite data, seasonal climate forecasts, and advanced computing with local knowledge, an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and community organisations is creating practical, easy-to-use digital tools to track and predict disease outbreaks.
The goal is to give policymakers clear, actionable information to strengthen health systems, build climate resilience, and reduce the impact of vector-borne diseases.
