Signals from Scotland

Written by Published in Lifestyle

A sustainable textiles collection inspired by and weaved through Scottish life and community

Paper Houses Design – a Scottish sustainable textiles brand, launched their new range via a worldwide crowdfunding campaign. The Signals collection includes both homeware and fashion items that are inspired by landscape, life and community in Scotland.

Mhairi Allan, founder of Paper Houses Design, has spent her design career in Scotland and has found it a wealth of inspiration with an exciting creative community. Mhairi is on a mission to help improve the textiles industry, and has created a brand statement with bold graphics and patterns, whilst consistently striving to be better for the environment; demonstrating that eco-conscious design doesn’t need to be subtle or low-key. She comments,

“Signals is inspired by the electric and phone cables that run into houses in small seafront villages in Aberdeenshire. These wires connect us to each other and the outside world but we need to remember to take time out to connect back with ourselves.”

The patterns drew inspiration from the wooden posts and wires that connect homes to the outside world and each other, reflecting the importance of taking time out to re-connect. With a vision to create meaningful and long-lasting products, whilst always striving to be more sustainable; Paper Houses Design’s studio uses the latest in textile technology, which uses less water and less ink than traditional printing. Not only is this better for the environment but means that the prints remain bold and never fade.

The Crowdfunding Creativity Programme,  run by Creative Scotland, aims to provide people working in the Scottish creative industries with the skills and tools to develop their own successful crowdfunding campaigns. Creative Scotland is the public body that supports the arts, screen and creative industries across all parts of the country on behalf of everyone who lives, works or visits there.

The Signals collection is available for pre-order on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign started on February 12 and runs through to March 15 2019. Special Kickstarter pricing will see all rewards from the collection at less than RRP and prices start from £5 up to £360 for a 6 person workshop in Aberdeen with bespoke designer Mhairi Allan.
