It’s been forty years since the UN assembly established the event to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment and in that time many cities and countries have hosted the event including Mexico and Rwanda, all of which have been hugely successful in bringing environmental issues to the fore.

Its primary aim has always been to raise awareness of the need to take positive environmental action and this year is no different. UNEP are making it very clear that an environmentally sustainable future is the only way forward if we hope to combat climate change as well as the faltering economy. You could say they think it’s a no brainer. rio-de-janeiro

So is a green economy a fanciful idea or is it something that we may see successfully implemented in the future? The answer probably is if we do not willingly make a change soon then we will soon be forced to, by which stage the destruction could be insurmountable and perhaps not rectifiable. By taking control and implementing The Green Economy Initiative now we could be protecting nature and society from a very grim outcome.

Encompassing everything from poverty reduction through to minimizing global carbon emissions, this important conference is sure to set the stage for vitally important world issues that affect each and every one of us.

And if anywhere knows how to throw a party its Rio, so prepare to be dazzled by a World Environment Day like no other – its Carnival time with a conscience. Let’s green up, get involved and get this party started!
